Team17 has announced that The Escapists 2 will release as soon as next month. Now you can look your best while escaping jail—and with friends, even.
Team17’s The Escapists was one of the more surprising indie hits when it released in 2014 (in Early Access form). And it had every right to be: there was a shameful lack of sandbox prison escape games, despite video games’ love of prison escape levels. But now, there’s a new entrant into the genre, and it’s… a sequel, The Escapists 2.
According to publisher Team17, The Escapists 2 will release on 22nd August on Steam (PC, Mac and Linux), PS4 and Xbox One. There is also a Switch version in the works, but it’s still in jail and Team17 is doing its best to help it escape.
As with the previous game, The Escapists 2 is all about escaping prisons, using what sparse tools and resources are at your disposal while in a penitentiary. This time, however, you can play with up to 3 friends, either online on via local split-screen mode. You can play both co-operatively and in a Versus mode where you try to escape prison faster than your buddy.
The Escapists 2 also packs an immense library of customisations for your inmate, so you can make sure you’re looking your best (or your worst) as you try to break out of jail. You can even try on the customisations online at the official website and share your creations with fellow jailbirds on social media.
The game is currently available to pre-order digitally on Steam. Team17 has also promised digital pre-orders for PS4 and Xbox One, but you can currently get the game for those consoles from ‘select retailers’. Those who pre-order will get a special authoritarianism-themed prison to break out of, called The Glorious Regime (pictured above the article).
