World of Goo will soon be more playable on modern computers. This patched version will be free on (and temporarily exclusive to) the Epic Games Store.
World of Goo is over a decade old at this point, but it still holds its own when it comes to physics-based puzzling. Unfortunately, it looks a mite ugly with its low resolution graphics, so now creator 2D Boy is bringing it back in (high-res) style.
According to PC Gamer, World of Goo will soon get an update that allows it to scale to high resolutions. This updated version of the game will be available on Epic Games Store as a freebie from 2nd to 16th May.
Strangely enough, the updated version of the game will be exclusive to Epic Games Store until an unspecified time. On Epic Games Store, the game will be available on PC and Mac only. A Linux version has been announced, but players on that platform will presumably have to wait until the update’s wider release.
Developer 2D Boy has also announced that leaderboards won’t be making it back to the game. They were already disabled years ago on account of the leaderboard server not being able to handle the load.
There’s no trailer depicting the new version of the game, so have a look at some retro footage:
Here’s how Epic Games Store describes the game:
Beautiful and surprising, the millions of Goo Balls who live in the World of Goo are curious to explore – but they don’t know that they are in a game, or that they are extremely delicious.
Welcome to the multiple “Game of The Year” award-winning puzzle game – World of Goo. Drag and drop living globs of goo to build structures, bridges, cannonballs, zeppelins, and giant tongues.
World of Goo is also available on iOS, Android, and Switch
